iTunes U Hits 1 Billion Downloads as Apple Tops 8 Million iPads in Schools

iTunes_u[1]Some Apple news today turned out to be nothing but bollocks but not all. Apple sent out a press release earlier today with a new boast. iTunes U, Apple’s 6-year-old education-focused content store, has just hit 1,000,000,000 downloads.

iTunes U has really taken off since Apple spun it out into its own app at the same time they launched iBooks Author in January 2012.

Apple now boasts that some iTunes U courses have enrollments of more than 250,000 students – in a single course. Leading universities including Duke, Yale, Cambridge, MIT and Oxford continue to extend their reach by enrolling more than 100,000 students in single iTunes U courses.

In other news, Apple also reported today that they have sold over 4 and a half million iPads to US schools since the launch of iBooks Author, and currently support over 8 million iPads in use in schools around the world.

Over 1,200 secondary schools and another 1,200 K-12 schools offer free educational material and related content as well as thousands of private and over 2,500 public courses across a broad range of topics, including the arts, sciences, health and medicine, education, business, and more, with Stanford University and The Open University each surpassing 60 million content downloads.
