The Atlantic Expands Their Digital Publishing Efforts With a New eBook Imprint

PrintAtlantic Media, the parent company of The Atlantic Monthly magazine, has been experimenting with ebook publishing for a couple years now and today they decided to formalize their efforts with the launch of a new imprint.

titleThe Atlantic Books is one of a number of paid product efforts that Atlantic Media plans to launch this year. This imprint will focus on what the magazine publisher describes as long form content. It will publish both fiction and nonfiction titles between 10,000 and 30,000 words, or about the length of a novella or Kindle Single. The debut title, Denial by Jonathan Rauch, is a memoir and the author’s 6 book. It’s available now.

"The launch of The Atlantic Books reflects our commitment to innovation in publishing in the service of great journalism and storytelling," said M. Scott Havens, president of The Atlantic. "I can’t think of a better inaugural book for our new imprint than Denial, a work that, I’m hopeful, will have an impact far beyond this digital medium."

Denial is actually the 5th ebook produced by Atlantic Media. The first ebook, simply titled The Civil War, was released in 2011 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of President Lincoln’s War.

That book was the digital edition of a 148 page print book published by Atlantic Media, so it might not count as a strictly digital publishing effort. But Atlantic Media has also published other ebooks, including an 82 page ebook on President Obama and a 293 page anthology of collected tech articles that were originally published in The Atlantic Monthly in 2012.

With the exception of The Civil War, the ebooks are priced either $.99 or $1.99. They are available through Kindle, Nook, and iBooks.
