Archos Unveils a New Tablet for the Cooking Enthusiast

chefpad_stand_hidef_1 Archos is a French tablet maker that seems determined to release a tablet for every purpose and in every imaginable size. Archos has offered screens ranging from 2.8″ to a 13.3″ FamilyPad. In the past they have launched a gaming tablet, an mp3 player, and a glorified alarm clock, and today they are venturing into the kitchen.

The Archos ChefPad takes your average mid-range 9.7″ tablet and wraps it in a durable and cleanable rubber shell. Archos is calling it a cooking assistant tablet, but strip away the shell and the default apps and it is a rather unremarkable Android tablet.

The ChefPad is running Android 4.1 on a dual-core 1.6GHz CPU. It also has a quad-core Mali 400 GPU, 1GB of RAM, 8GB Flash storage, a microSD card slot, and Wifi.

There’s no Bluetooth on this tablet, and that is going to limit its ability to work with Bluetooth speakers (something I would want in a kitchen tablet). This tablet also lacks the forward facing speakers I would have expected as an alternative to Bluetooth, and the rubber shell is probably going to muffle the sound.

But the ChefPad does have HDMI out, a speaker and mike, and a g-sensor. It also has a pair of cameras. Both reportedly have a resolution of 2MP, though the image quality is still unknown.

This tablet will ship with Google Play as well as a suite of cooking apps. According to Archos:

The Chef’s Apps selection on the ARCHOS ChefPad filters through thousands of apps to provide the best cooking content in a range of categories including recipes, drinks, shopping, cooking TV and more. Whether you are looking for dinner ideas, a good wine match, a balanced meal plan or a smoothie, Chef Apps gets it done.

The ChefPad has a 9.7 inch, 1024×768 screen, making it the equal of cutting-edge tablets released in 2011. But given that the price is expected to be under 200 euros, I would not call the screen resolution a shortcoming.

The ChefPad is expected to go on sale in Europe in June 2013 for about 170 euros or £149. That comes to about $220 to $230 USD, though the US price will almost certainly be cheaper ($199 or less).

Are you sure the ChefPad doesn’t have Bluetooth? Or is it possible that Archos didn’t mention it? Including a microSD slot and not Bluetooth seems bizarre.

Bluetooth support is a near-requirement for Google Play certification ("should" in the RFC 2119 terminology that the Android compatibility document uses). I’d thought it was the reason the Nook HD and HD+ got Google Play, but the Nook Color and Nook Tablet (perfectly capable of running it as seen via rooting) did not. Meanwhile the ChefPad has Google Play, so I’d be very surprised if it didn’t have Bluetooth.
