Hisense Officially Launches Sero Android Tablets With Prices Starting at $99.

sero_00[2]That $149 Nexus 7 clone I reported on a couple days ago is now official, and it has a $99 sibling.

The Chinese gadget maker Hisense has just posted a press release for the official launch of their Sero tablets. There is going to be a pair of 7″ Android tablets, and in the US they will only be available via Walmart. The Sero 7 Pro was the tablet that leaked earlier this week, and Hisense has confirmed the specs:

• 1.3GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core CPU
• Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
• 7 inch, 1280 x 800 IPS display
• 1GB of RAM
• 8GB of on-board memory
• 2.0MP front camera
• 5.0MP rear camera with flash and auto-focus
• Mini HDMI, SD, and USB ports
• Built-in NFC (Near Field Communications)
• Bluetooth, Wifi
• 10-hour battery life

This tablet is Google-certified, and it is selling for $149. It’s going to be available on the Walmart website, but not until 24 May. Luckily it seems that this tablet will also be available in stores, or so the the early sales reported a couple days ago suggest.

I have to say that the in-store sales surprised me. Walmart carries an extensive selection of ereaders and tablets on their website but the stock carried in store is usually limited to only a few popular models.

Hisense also announced a cheaper 7″ tablet today. The Sero 7 is targeted at the bottom of the budget market, and it’s going to sell for $99.  Like the Sero 7 Pro, this cheaper tablet will ship with Google Play as well as a number of other pre-installed apps, including the Nook app for Android. VUDU, Walmart, Pandora, and Facebook.

As you can see from the specs this is a much weaker tablet, but it is still a decent set of hardware for the price:

• 1.6 GHz dual core processor
• Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
• 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display
• Built-in WiFi, Mini HDMI, SD, and Micro USB ports
• 1GB of RAM
• 4GB internal memory
