Samsung to Launch Galaxy Tab 3 Kids Tablet

GALAXY Tab 3 Kids 1Samsung isn’t having nearly as much luck in the Android tablet market as they are in smartphones but that doesn’t mean they won’t release yet another model.

A Korean gadget blog got their hands on a flyer for a new Samsung Galaxy Tab. It seems Samsung is going to release a kids version of the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 with a colorful rubberized shell.

Update: Samsung has updated their press website with a product page for this tablet.

It’s called, appropriately enough, the Galaxy Tab 3 Kids (model number SM-T2105). According to the spec sheet in the leak, the Tab 3 Kids runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on a dual-core 1.2GHz with 1GB of RAM, 8GB of Flash storage, a pair of cameras (3.2MP and 1.3MP), and a 4Ah battery.

Basically the Tab 3 Kids is simply a re-branded Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 with the addition of some extras like brighter color options, parental locks and a suite of built-in content suitable for children.

It’s not clear from the leak exactly what Samsung will offer that is better than the existing kids and educational tablets on the market. Counting the XO Learning tablet, Fuhu Nabi tablets, and the whole host of kids tablets from everyone from Archos to E-Fun to Amazon (Kindle Free-Time) that is actually a rather crowded market, but I suppose Samsung will be able to trade on their reputation for quality hardware.

Samsung later reported that this tablet will come "pre-loaded with top ranked kid’s apps and brand new Kid’s Store aimed at driving the educational possibilities of technology for kids. Pre-loaded content includes educational, games, entertainment and e-book apps. The tablet also offers parents the ability to select the apps they want their kids to have access to using the Application Manager." It’s also going to include parental controls will allow parents to set specific time periods for use.

Pricing and availability remain unknown, but it looks like that Samsung might have planned to target the back-to-school season.

Unfortunately, they missed. The back-to-school period started in July and is drawing to a close here in the US. Yes, I know that school hasn’t actually started, but most parents have already bought the gadgets and school supplies for the coming year.

Update: Samsung says that this tablet will be available in Korea in September and subsequently available across China, Europe, U.S., Africa, South America and South East Asia.

Back to school varies a lot- even within the U.S. with many kids not going back till Sept. but I agree they have missed their chance. And Samsung does have the name recognition that might persuade parents to buy this.
