Pocketbook Launches KidRead, an App Which Trades Reading Time for Game Time

kidread logoWhat with Kindle Freetime, the kid’s account option on the Nook HD, and apps like Kids Place, parental control apps are old hat in September 2013. And now there’s a new entry into a crowded niche.

I’ve just learned that Pocketbook launched their KidRead app a couple weeks back. This app, which can be downloaded from Google Play, gives parents the ability to restrict what kid’s can access on an Android device.

The Ukrainian ereader and tablet maker has been maintaining an Android reading app for the past several years, so a new kids focused reading app was naturally the next step. KidRead lets parents limit access to specific apps, and parents can also set a time limit for each app. That is nothing new, but that’s not all this app can do. Parents can also use the KidRead app to set up a reward system.

If a kid spends time reading or using educational apps, they  can earn time to play Angry Birds:

The app is free, and it requires that parents set up an account on the KidRead website. Once that is done parents can set up a specific profile for each child and determine which installed apps will be visible to each child. Parents also have the option of receiving status emails with updates on which apps their kids have been using.
