Verizon Launches $5 Daily Data Plan for Tablets

Verizon announcedVERIZON-WIRELESS-LOGO[1] their own cut  priced Android tablet last month and this week they launched a new reduced price data plan to go with it.

Designed for the techie who is only away from their broadband at certain times, Verizon’s new $5 Daily Plan offers up to 300MB of data for a mere $5. The catch? You have to use the entire allotment within 24 hours.

The 300MB bucket included with this new plan might not sound like much, but it strikes me as the right price to tempt tablet owners into getting a 4G equipped tablet. It’s cheap enough that a customer won’t mind paying for it the 1 or 2 days a month that they’re away from their home wifi network.

For example, this plan would be cost effective for me to use on a 2 or 3 day trip, or even on a week long trip to CES in January. The $5 a day cost is actually less than I have paid on past trips.

The plan is good with Verizon’s new Ellipsis 7 tablet, or with other tablets and connected devices sold by Verizon.

In a way this is Verizon’s response to the free data plan that T-Mobile started offering with tablets last month. That plan offered 200MB of data for free for the life of the tablet, and was bundled into the price as teaser which T-Mobile hoped would encourage customers to upgrade to more expensive plans. And like T-Mobile, Verizon is hoping to get customers to upgrade. But if that doesn’t happen Verizon will at least have sold another 4G-equipped tablet and have filled a new market niche.

As I reported last month, tablets owners more likely to use wifi than 3G/4G when going online, and naturally that is a trend that both Verizon and T-Mobile would like to change.
