New Tolino Vision eReader Leaked on Design Website

The tolino visionGerman ebook consortium Tolino has long been rumored to be planning to release another ebook reader, and I think we just got a first look. Their new device showed up on a design website yesterday (the same site where I found the Pocketbook Ultra) and I’m pretty sure it’s the real deal.

There aren’t very many details available  about the Tolino Vision, but I do know that it is described as "the new, ultra-flat tolino e-reader". It’s said to be lighter, faster, and have "space for up to 2,000 e-books". According to the listing, this device was designed by a team at Deutsche Telekom, one of the members of the Tolino consortium.

In spite of what some might tell you, there actually aren’t any specs available; just a marketing blurb. But if I had to guess I would bet that this ebook reader has a Carta E-ink screen and a faster CPU. It’s also reasonable to assume it will have a frontlight, touchscreen, and Wifi.

So how do I know it’s real?

I don’t have confirmation but I can tell you that shortly after Deutsche Telekom was queried, the listing on the design website was taken down (less than an hour later). The page had theoretically been posted by their design group, and they probably took it down at the orders of management. Luckily the page is still available in the Google Cache, so I have a link to show you and prove that it did exist.

That is thin evidence, I know, but if this weren’t an official design then DT could simply have denied their involvement. Removal suggests that someone in the design group really did upload the image and write the description, otherwise they would not have been able to take it down so quickly.

Johannes Haupt of Lesen.net is expecting that the Tolino Vision could be launched as early as next week. A major book fair is going to be held in Leipzig, and I too think that would be a good opportunity to unveil the Tolino Vision.

Eink reader designs are getting pretty generic, aren’t they?

Yes, nearly all look faintly like the iPad.

Cue Apple lawsuit in 3 … 2… 1 …

Featureless gray slab with a single button in the center bottom.
I’m thinking Amazon might have a better trade dress complaint (Kindle touch) in the ebook arena, but since Apple is the litigious one… Yeah, they’ll be hearing from cupertino.

Looks pretty nice, judging by that photo, which may be shopped.

Well, yes. They’re all shopped.
