Onyx Boox AfterGlow 2 Launched – Android 4.2, Dual-Core CPU

Onyx-Boox-AfterGlow-2Onyx has just quietly launched a new ebook reader, the Boox AfterGlow 2, and it is available today through Onyx’s Polish partner Arta Tech.

The AfterGlow 2 sports a 6″ Pearl E-ink screen, not Carta, but other than that this is some ereader. It runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean on a dual-core 1.2GHz CPU with 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, Wifi, audio, and a microSD card slot. It has both a frontlight and a capacitive touchscreen.

In terms of software, the AfterGlow 2 ships with Googe Play as well as Ivona TTS and the other apps found on the Onyx Boox T68 Lynx, including a web browser, note-taking app, and both of the Mediopolis apps that the Lynx got in an update this week as well as the more than adequate reading app OReader.

The AfterGlow 2 weighs in at 184 grams and measures 8.7mm thin. Its 1.7Ah battery is said to offer up to 8 weeks of battery life. With a price tag of 124 euros, this is not the cheapest ebook reader on the market but it does offer a good value in comparison to the Kindle Paperwhite (which costs 109 euros on Amazon.de).

It also offers features some of us would like to see on more ereaders, like page turn buttons on either side of the screen and a more powerful CPU. And since it ships with Google Play and is sold by a European company, it’s also a viable alternative to the Boyue T62.

Are you planning to get one? I’m going to add it to my todo list, but I’m at least a month behind on reviews so i don’t know that I’ll be able to get to this one soon.

If I had to buy a replacement eReader for my i62HD (its page-turn buttons are starting to degrade) right away, this would probably be my top candidate, but I’m hoping to hold off for something more closely resembling a (technical rough-edges smoothed off, independent, version of the) Kindle Voyage than a mere slight evolution of current designs, like the AG2.

I’m still waiting for your T62 review 🙂 I’m also still in need of an ereader.

If this one has google play ( so I can use Pocket and Kindle) and 8weeks battery life (four is enough), then it can be the one.

I’m doing it this weekend. I swear.

It sounds like a T68 minus the Carta scree, so presumably it’s cheaper. Any word on pricing? I expect it will have the same PW1-standard front-light.

Nate Hoffelder November 8, 2014 um 10:25 am

Price is 124 euros.

T68 doesn’t have carta screen as far as i know

Hrafn November 8, 2014 um 8:24 pm

The main difference between the AG2 & the T68 would appear to be that the AG2 has a 6″ screen, the T68 a 6.8″.

Hrafn November 8, 2014 um 8:26 pm

(And yes, they’re both Pearl, according to multiple sources.)

I bought an Icarus Illumina (Boyue T61) but was seriously underwhelmed. Battery life was shocking (24 hours max) and many apps had unreadable screen elements and dialog boxes with no text. In the end, I realised that reading RSS on my phone was much, much quicker and I could send longer articles to a standard reader.

I now have a Kobo Aura and I really like it. Like a previous commenter, I wanted to use the T61 for Pocket and read Kindle books. The Aura has Pocket built in (without tags though) and I use Calibre to convert Kindle books to ePub. Pocket on the Aura is much better that Pocket was under Android on the T61.

Android may be OK for eInk but unfortunately I can’t say the same for the apps.

I guess it depends on your approach and needs. Apps and Android work well for me on a rooted Nook ST.

Hi, excuse me for the bad English… Yesterday I ordered 1 item from this AfterGlow 2 item, I am now waiting for the arrival. If it will here, I planned "hacking" it, with the possibilities for the reading .odt documents, and playing the ogg music files (and perhaps the .sid files too?) . And, hopefully, make a full small Linux "distro" to this device, from scratch… I am advanced Linux user, I use my own LFS-based "distro", but former I never used any Android. If somebody has experience about the ebook-hacking, please share me the documents about it…

Thank you!

Hi,

I was about to buy the T68 but was embarrassed by the 6.8 screen. So the AG2 seems perfect. Anyone know if there are other differences?

Thanks

I took delivery of an AG2 yesterday. While I’m fairly impressed with the device physically, battery life has been, to quote a previous commenter, shocking. Put to bed at around midnight last night with 81%, at just after four this morning it had dropped to 19%. I’m playing with Android and app settings during the course of the week to find a potential culprit. Android settings said that over 80% of battery usage was attributable to the screen of all things. I did also see though that it had synced my Google calendar and contacts, I have the most recent Kobo and Kindle apps installed from the Google Play store, and I’m using Nova Launcher in lieu of the default.

This sounds like the usual Android battery issue. Installing an app like Deep Sleep will usually fix it. This utility will force every other app to go to sleep and only wake up at set intervals.

It’s wonderful to find somebody who have this e-reader! I’m thinking of buy it, so I would be very thankful if you can comment further about your experience

Got a solution for the battery?

Orlando January 25, 2015 um 3:20 pm

As it turns out, I just needed to leave the device to charge overnight to tune up the battery properly. Also, ensure that you leave the setting where the Boox turns itself off completely after a period of inactivity alone. All good now, and I love my device.

I just posted my review is the device yesterday. Hope it helps! https://technologyimpulse.wordpress.com/2015/04/02/onyx-boox-afterglow-2-review

Hello everyone,

For the batterie problem it is recommended on the internet to install apps like Deep Sleep or SetCPU, but you have to roote it before. And I don’t want to do so.

Do you have any advice for applications to save battery without rooting ?

Thank you.
