Amazon Announces Best-Selling Books of 2014
With the year drawing to a close, everyone from Google to Apple has been posting of their best selling titles for 2014. Yesterday Amazon published their list.
Since this is a single combined list for both print and digital, there’s not much of a chance that you’ll find indie titles on it. The market is still primarily print, which is still dominated by traditional publishers. In fact there is but a single indie title on this list: The Fixed Trilogy by Laurelin Paige.

Amazon has said before that the digital sales outpace print right? That means that the mainstream trad books for the biggest authors still move a significant number of units per title.

What’s curious is how we are expected to believe indies are out-earning and out-charting trad pub at every turn when every retailer – including those that don’t deal in print at all – show an indie wilderness at the top.
This past week saw one trad pubbed author (Sidney Sheldon) with six ebook simultaneously in the Kindle UK top twenty. A safe bet if Author Earnings ever did a UK report that particular day would not be the day they chose.
The Author Earnings carefully selected snapshots may tell us indies what we want to hear, but anyone can take a half dozen photos over a year, each on a sunny day, and assert it never rains.
Author Earnings shows us the weather on a selected day of their choosing. The retailers' end of year charts show us the annual climate.

I started looking through this list and was quickly amazed at how expensive the traditional publishers are pricing books on the Kindle. I tend to think anything over $10 on the Kindle is too much too pay, but these are almost all over that. The following list shows the number from the list, the Kindle price, the paperback cost, and the hardcover cost if there is no paperback. As you can see, the kindle prices are very high.

Which shows trad pub knew what they were doing standing up to Amazon’s demands that ebooks should all be priced to suit Amazon’s needs.
People are clearly willing to pay a premium for content they want when they want it. Why would any sensible business not charge more if the consumer is willing to pay it?
At the same time trad pub is happily charging the same or less than many indies for back-list titles, getting the best of both worlds.
