Yotaphone 2 Coming to T-Mobile (in the US) in March?

YotaPhone-2[1]There’s a story going around this week that the funky new dual-screen smartphone, the Yotaphone 2, will be coming to the US branch of T-Mobile this spring.

That smartphone launched in December in Europe and the middle east, and we were promised that it would launch in the US some time in 2015. Now Android Authority is saying that it’s coming this spring:

According to our sources that are familiar with the matter, the YotaPhone 2 will make its way to T-Mobile around March-April. Though we are very confident in the validity of this information, sometimes even the most reliable sources can prove inaccurate, so do not treat this information as official. There’s always a chance that unforeseen issues will change the schedule.

The device is also headed to a Canadian carrier sometime in 2015, but that name has yet to be disclosed.

So is this rumor true?

Possibly.

The Yotaphone is equipped with a GSM cellular chip, which means that in the US it is compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile. And since the phone has cleared the FCC, at the very least there’s no technical reason why T-Mobile wouldn’t carry the Yotaphone 2.

But in all honesty, I would bet that it is more likely that AT&T will outbid T-Mobile for the right to offer a subsidized model. This is what they did with the Fire Phone, and if I’m right then the only way to get a Yotaphone at a subsidized price would be through AT&T.

yotaphone 2In short, the Yotaphone 2 will work with T-Mobile but I’m expecting that you will need to pay the full retail price do so. And since the Yotaphone 2 is selling for 699 euros right now, I’m not sure how many people are going to want it that badly (especially not 6 months after the iPhone 6  was launched).

With a 5″ AMOLED screen and a 4.7″ E-ink screen, it certainly looked nifty when I saw it at CES 2015. But I don’t know that I’d be willing to pay $700 for the phone.

While this may not be the phone I purchase, I do hope it does well enough to promote the concept.
