Apple’s Hiring a Manager to Run Its Search Engine Program

4993073773_9326d60c79_m[1]CultofMac has discovered a new job listing at Apple which suggests that it is getting into the search engine business.

Apple is currently looking to hire an engineering project manager for something called Apple Search. The position would be based in San Francisco, and requires a program manager to oversee backend operations for a "search platform supporting hundreds of millions of users."

The ad notes that the successful candidate will, "Play a part in revolutionizing how people use their computers and mobile devices."

2512148775_2676e1fba1_o[1]Of all of its competitors (MS, Amazon, Google, Yahoo), Apple is the one major tech company without a visible presence in the search engine market, so it should probably come as no surprise that this is about to change.

Even though Apple integrated Siri into the iPhone 4s in 2011, that virtual assistant was integrated into Google (before September 2013) and then Bing. And now Apple wants to roll their own search engine.

Apparently this is a move which Apple has been considering for some time; Apple hired search guru William Stasior in late 2012, and last year a developer by the nae of Jan Moesen discovered a web-crawling bot originating from Apple’s servers.

When lined up in a row, these details suggest that Apple’s search engine has long been under development. Let’s hope it stays that way until it is functional; we don’t need another Apple Maps fiasco.
