Dell Launches Windows, Android Education Tablets

With Dell joining the public scrum, the edtech market is going to get a lot hotter.

Dell is unveiling a pair of tablets today which it says are designed for the educational market. The Venue 10 (Android) tablet and Venue 10 Pro (Windows) tablet sport identical 10″ screens, and are described as being  "schoolyard tough", but will be available for any to buy.

Dell Venue 10 Pro

The Venue 10 Pro is going to run Windows 8.1 on an Intel Core M CPU with 2GB RAM and 64GB or 128GB internal storage. It will also sport Wifi, Bluetooth, a bevy of sensors, a microSD card slot, HDMI, USB, and two cameras (1.2MP and 5MP).

Weighing at 1.59 pounds, the tablet will measure 11 mm thick and pack in a 38 WHr battery. The optional keyboard dock will of course add weight and thickness. Starting price for the Venue 10 Pro will be $379, and it’s scheduled to ship early next month. The keyboard will cost $50.

Less is know about the Dell Venue 10 tablet, which Dell says will run Android 5.0 Lollipop. There’s no mention of a CPU, and in fact there’s very little in the way of solid info from Dell: no price or specific release date, just that it will be available in spring 2015.

It too will have an optional keyboard dock.

Dell has been interested in the educational market for several years now. Well, they’ve been marketing to college students and equipping school computer labs for decades, but for the past several years they’ve also been one of a number of device makers pursuing the lucrative 1:1 market.

Dell was one of the bidders who lost the Guilford County Schools contract to Amplify a few years back, and now they’re stepping up their game with ruggedized designs that they say will survive the worst a kid can throw at it.
