This is just a quick note to let my readers know that I am back online.
For the past 24 hours my webhost was having yet another server issue, but they swear they have finally fixed it. (Of course, that’s what they told me last night, after which they wasted 13 hours in not believing me when I said the problem persisted.)
If you’re looking for a hosting service, may I suggest that you not look at MediaTemple.
I’ve been with them for 10 months, and in that time they’ve averaged one major server issue about every other month. The tech support is crippled by poor procedures, and the “certified technicians” , well, I’m not going to complain because in all honesty I have given up on them.
I’m currently paying MediaTemple $30 a month for a “Premium WordPress” service, but aside from not having to worry about resource limitations I don’t see how MT is any better than the $5 to $10 a month hosting plans.
I missed you.
Thanks.
Btw, for a while now there are three garbage characters at the beginning of each article on the start page. Today they are “+-*”, were others before. The articles’ own pages are fine, though.
Well that’s weird. I never saw them until today; they disappear in seconds.
Do they disappear within a few seconds, or do they stay visible?
They stay visible.
Thanks. This is honestly the first I’ve head of them.
I finally pinned down the problem. The Addthis sharing plugin was inserting the characters.
Not sure if you’re looking for a new host, but I haven’t had many problems with my site’s host, A Small Orange.
I should start looking yes. I need to break my habit of masochism and look for a new host.
Thanks.
I use LinkSky. Been with ’em since 2006 (at least).
I’ve been on Media Temple since August. I’ve experienced a few blips, but have mostly been very satisfied – especially considering I’m paying about 50% of what I was at ZippyKid/Pressable with much higher reliability and stability. By the by, I saw your tweet about being down and obviously this post, but the site was never down for me. Did you test from your smartphone or a Starbucks? I wonder if it was a routing thing. Overall, tho, I think you should expect imperfection unless you’re willing to pay top dollar for WPEngine or write for someone else. For me, I’d rather ride out the blips. (And Media Temple’s technical architecture is far superior to those single digit hosting services you mention – being on a truly shared server with capped resources will bite you in the ass if you get any sort of traffic at all or if a neighbor on the same server does.)
