Digg, Instapaper, The New York Times Updated With Support for the Apple Watch

apple watchWith reports coming in that the Apple Watch could be shipping ahead of  the scheduled 24 April launch day, developers are scrambling to get their apps ready for Apple’s new wearable.

An untold number of apps have been updated over the past few weeks, including Digg, The New York Times Cooking app, and Instapaper.

To start with, Instapaper has updated its read-it-later app to support the Apple Watch. Unlike some of the other apps, Instapaper did not add the option of reading on your Apple Watch, but they did add a few controls:

What’s New in Version 6.3 (iTunes)

  • Apple Watch support! Experience a whole new way to use Instapaper by triggering text-to-speech for your articles directly from your Apple Watch. When you finish listening to the article, you can easily like, archive, organize, or delete the article using the force touch menu.

Digg also rolled out a new version of its news app today, but the changelog was considerably more vague:

What’s New in Version 5.7.0 (iTunes)

  • Bug fixes & Improvements
  • Support for Apple Watch

Other apps which have been updated for the Apple Watch include ESPN, which added notifications and lets you read headlines on your Apple Watch; Circa News, which wants you to read news on your wrist; CNN, which lets you scan headlines and continue reading interesting articles on your iDevice; and Al Jazeera for AJ+ and Yahoo News Digest, both of which will be pushing notifications to your Apple Watch.

And last but not least, The New York Times has updated its cooking app. This comes a a distinct surprise given that the app was only launched on the iPhone earlier this month; before that it had been limited to the iPad.

The NYT has put a lot of work into its Apple Watch support, so much so that I keep giggling every time I read the changelog:

What’s New in Version 2.1.1 (iTunes)

Introducing NYT Cooking for Apple Watch:

  • View an NYT Cooking recipe on your Apple Watch
  • Check recipe ingredients as you shop or cook
  • Check off recipe preparation steps as you cook
  • Search 17,000+ recipes from your wrist

I kid you not, folks, the NYT Cooking app is going to be the killer app on the Apple Watch. What could be better than looking at a recipe one word at a time on a 1.5″ screen?

What could be better than scrolling around a high resolution image so you can see what the output will look like?

Thank you, NYT Cooking app, for letting me view recipes on the Apple Watch. Finally someone has released an app which has convinced me I have a reason to spend $ 17,000 on the gold Apple Watch.

The snark is completely inaccurate, nonsensical, unfunny, tiring, old, pathetic, childish, and doesn’t reflect well on you. I’d think you’d serve yourself best by moving on.

someone needs their Cheerios

the snark was pretty funny and was exactly what I was thinking – not sure of the purpose of this thing and what 12 year old eyeball can even read the screen unless indeed, a single word scrolls by at a time

It continues: you only sound like you are completely oblivious and haven’t actually looked at the produce and/or must make shit up. Can you show me a single picture of any app displaying text that has any problem displaying more than one word?

What does a "12 year old eyeball" even mean to you? Because I have no clue what it is supposed to mean to me?

Don’t be a fool, no need to pay 17k on it, you can just wait by a garbage can after launch. Won’t take too long before people realize what they payed for lol.

Still, trying to use it would be a mistake. The UI navigation is bananas. Touchscreen plus a button and the digital crown that’s both a wheel and a button. I joke that the crown is like sticking a full size joystick on a phone or replacing the touchpad on laptop with 2 knobs etch a sketch style. If you do try it,study this first (high res warning) http://i.imgur.com/FnNZzUG.jpg
And make sure you cancel winters, you wouldn’t want to try using it when you need gloves.
The thing is gloriously terrible.
