iPad Still King of Declining(?) Tablet Market

Best_tabletsApple may be going through several quarters of declining tablet sales, but they’re not the only ones.

New estimates from IDC show that global tablet(*) shipments declined last quarter by about 6%. Of the 47.1 million tablets shipped, Apple took first place, followed by Samsung, Lenovo, Asus, and LG.

Apple told us earlier this week that they shipped 12.6 million tablets last quarter, and IDC estimated that Samsung shipped 9 million tablets. Lenovo, Asus, and LG shipped 2.5 million, 1.8 million, and 1.4 million tablets, respectively.

IDC Research Director Jean Philippe Bouchard noted that "The market slowdown that we witnessed last quarter is continuing to impact the tablet segment, but we see some growth areas that are starting to materialize."

The 4th quarter of 2014 saw global tablet shipments dip by 2 million units, or at least that is what IDC claims. As we learned in February, IDC isn’t counting tablets smaller than 7″. This means that IDC is not tracking the new Fire HD 6 tablet from Amazon as part of the tablet market, and as a result we don’t actually know how many tablets were shipped.

Of course, IDC only offers estimates of tablet shipments and not hard figures, so we’ve never known the actual number of tablets shipped. It’s just that now the estimates are based on different criteria than before.
