Epic Brings Its Kids' eBook Subscription Service to Android

epic logoEpic’s 18-month-old ebook subscription service may have a kid-friendly focus and a catalog of 10,000 titles (including titles from HarperCollins, Macmillan, and Scholastic), but it’s been missing something: support for Android.

That changed this week. I was too busy with BEA 2015 to report on it, but Epic released an Android app on Thursday. The app can be found in Google Play, and there’s also an app for the iPad and iPhone.

Epic offers a $10 a month service which offers access to a library of ebooks for the under 12 reader. Well-known books and series include Fancy Nancy, Flat Stanley, The Berenstain Bears, Charlie Brown, The Chronicles of Narnia, Ramona, Batman, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and many more.

With over 10,000 titles, the Epic catalog runs the gamut from picture books to comic books, graphic novels, chapter books, early readers, audio-enabled "read to me" books, non-fiction titles, educational books, and junior novels.

That sounds great and all, but Epic actually has a fair amount of competition in this niche.

There’s the more general interest services like Scribd and Oyster, but also Reading Rainbow, Amazon’s Kindle Freetime Unlimited, Disney (no Android app, though), Sesame Street, and a whole host of lesser known names like StarWalk Kids Media and  Little Critter Library.
