Five for Five – Amazon Inks Deal With Random Penguin

random_penguin_dr[1]Reports of Amazon’s negotiations with Penguin Random House were not greatly exaggerated:

Amazon has signed new long-term sales agreements with Penguin Random House in both the U.S and U.K. PRH was the last of the American “Big Five” publishers to reach a deal over sales terms for print and e-books. Just before May’s BookExpo America, reports surfaced in the British press that PRH in the U.K. and Amazon were in an impasse in negotiations, although both sides, and PRH in particular, downplayed those reports.

We obviously do not know the terms of the deal, but I am hoping that it will be less than the outright agency deals that the other four major US trade publishers negotiated with Amazon over the past 9 months.

S&S, Hachette, Macmillan, and HarperCollins have each signed new deals with Amazon, after which ebooks from those four publisher got more expensive and were no longer discounted.

Unless and until someone releases a statement, we’re just going to have to wait for the ebook prices in the Kindle Store to tell us just what kind of a deal was struck.

I noticed that I am definitely buying less ebooks than before. Even though I have 1200+ Kindle ebooks I have noticed a definite shift in my buying practices…I am going to the library for some of my fictional reads.
An example:
Robin Hobb’s Fool’s Assasin…
Before 5.99
After 11.99
I borrowed this from the public library instead of buying. The title was so saved in an Amazon wishlist…when I decided to buy it 2 weeks later I got annoyed at the price and went to the library…sale lost.
