HarperCollins UK Signs Deal With Amazon

17226857438_ee5fc2e6a1_bNo one is willing to cop to the specifics, but The Bookseller reported this morning that the UK sub for NewsCorp’s book publishing arm has inked a new contract with Amazon:

HarperCollins UK has concluded what its chief executive Charlie Redmayne described as “tough negotiations” with Amazon over new terms. …

Redmayne would not be drawn on the nature of the deal, or if it was a return to full agency. He said: “I am confident that we secured the best deal that we could possibly have got: we negotiated hard and long to make sure that was the case. It’s the best deal we could have done.”

Over here in the US HarperCollins was the fourth of six major publishers to have inked new book distribution deal with Amazon. Harper signed that deal in April, and was followed by Random Penguin in June, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in July. S&S, Hachette, and Macmillan all signed deals late last year or early in 2015.

There’s no word yet on whether the new HarperCollins UK deal involved agency terms (where the publisher sets and controls the sale price of its ebooks) but evidence suggests that at least five of the six US deals did have agency terms.

Amazon has not commented on the terms of the deal.
