Audible Snags Public Radio Talent

Audible Snags Public Radio Talent Amazon Podcast Audible continued to build its original content team this week when it scooped up several public radio producers.

Current.org reports that Ellen Horne, executive producer of WNYC’s Radiolab; Jesse Baker, EP of NPR’s Ask Me Another; and Martha Little, a former EP for America Abroad Media, are taking jobs at Audible. The three new hires will start later this fall and work under the direction of Eric Nuzum, the Audible SVP of original content.

Nuzum is himself a recent hire at Audible; he left NPR in May to take his current role as the head of the original content team, and now he's building that team. "They are the best of the best and I’m humbled they have all decided to join me in building Audible’s original programming," Nuzum told Current in an email. "We hope to announce many more similar hires in the coming weeks and months."

Far from being a surprise pivot, Audible has long been a publisher of audio content. As of April 2015 they had produced over 150,000 works, including audiobooks by both publishers and indie authors as well as podcasts. With some titles that means adding sound effects and music; in other instances Audible has put together an entire production, almost a radio play adaptation of the written story.

But as we can see from the recent hires, Audible plans to do more than just build on the works of others. "Our original content is more like Netflix or Amazon for audio," Beth Anderson, the EVP and Publisher at Audible, told the Winston-Salem Journal. "We are hoping to expand our audience with people who might not be as interested in books, but in drama that we can capture on audio."
