Infographic: Gender Ratio In Popular Fiction

Icelandic designers Sirrý & Smári have created a colorful infographic that shows the gender divide in fiction.

Some of the works in this graphic include The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones. The male characters outnumber the female characters in each of these works, especially in The Hobbit, which had no female characters at all.

And as you would expect, male characters in GoT not only outnumbered their counterparts, they also had a worse survival rate.

Fun!

My characters…lessee…Looks to be about 50/50, whether it’s the mysteries, the urban fantasy or the fantasy. Even when it comes to villains. that holds fairly true, but is slightly skewed to men (depends on the book). For children, it’s skewed to male. For pets…it’s about even with horses, cats, dogs and a bird. I’d say it’s slightly skewed to cats.
