Amazon Launches New Book Listing Pages

Amazon is in the middle of revamping its website this week and they’ve just started rolling out a new design for its book section.

Gone is the small cover image on the left, buy box on the right, and crowded info panel in between. It’s been replaced by a new layout:

The new layout is not yet used to display all titles (in fact, I can’t find it in the Kindle Store at all) but a reader has tipped me to the change.

She didn’t like the new design, but my feelings are mixed. It’s a lot cleaner and less cluttered than before, but I also think it’s too wide. There’s all this wasted space on the screen, while important details like the book description is pushed below the fold.

Let’s hope this is just a beta test, and not the final design.

What do you think of the new look?

I’ve been randomly seeing that new layout over the past several months. Doesn’t seem to be associated with any particular book or category; feels more like they’re doing random a/b testing or something.

I always hate it when the new layout shows up as it takes me a minute to figure out where the "Add to wish list" button went (it moves from under "Add to cart" to over on the left side somewhere). I always just add stuff to my wish list first, and then actually buy later so it really throws me off.

Looks like it will fit nicely on TVs via the FireTV.
A bigger cover pic is always a good idea.

I like this new layout.

I’m glad that there’s less whitespace on my tablet in portrait even when I request the desktop site. When I tap on the Kindle tab, it goes back to the original layout.

Meanwhile, Smashwords' site remains the same.

Please just make it easy for me to find the book description and the wishlist button. The last update, they hid half the book description and it’s so slow to load that part, I have to stay at the top of the page waiting, waiting…oh, there it is, now click MORE because it turns out that I want to KNOW WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT. DUH. The new design doesn’t look like a huge improvement.

Yuk. The Ratings score is smaller and pushed way to the left, nearly out of vision AND the Book description text in nearby at or below the fold (and under an embedded ad too). Mucho wasted whitespace too. I agree with Maria, not helpful or better.
