Barnes & Noble has made its transition from a bookseller to a retailer that sells anything popular, but they haven't abandoned books entirely. Instead, books are getting the novelty gift treatment.
Today the retailer announced its second annual holiday signed editions program. Barnes & Noble has signed up over one hundred popular authors to autograph their books so that they can be sold in B&N stores nationwide.
“For the second year in a row, a huge array of authors have demonstrated incredible enthusiasm for participating in Barnes & Noble’s Signed Editions program, and we are thrilled to be bringing back this one-of-a-kind offering on Black Friday,” said Jaime Carey, Chief Operating Officer at Barnes & Noble. “There’s a creative gift awaiting everyone at Barnes & Noble stores and shoppers can delight the readers on their list with a truly meaningful gift – a book made special with a favorite author’s signature.”
B&N plans to have half a million copies in its stores in time for Black Friday. More than 120 acclaimed authors are participating, including Khaled Hosseini, Khloe Kardashian, Bill Nye, Paulo Coelho, PewPewDie, and David Baldacci. (You can find a complete list at the end of this post, or on the B&N website).
The authors reportedly signed around 4,500 copies each. B&N says the authors averaged "12 hours’ worth of signing at a rate of 400 books per hour, and used over 3,150 pens in total". And as you can see in the folowing video, it was quite the operation.
That's a lot of work on the part of the authors; how much do you think this cost B&N?
