White Kindle Launched in India

white kindleAmazon usually launches their newest hardware in the US first but when it comes to the white Kindle, Amazon is working backwards.

After first launching the white Kindle in Japan and China, and then releasing it in Europe last month, Amazon has quietly launched the white version of the basic Kindle in India.

The white Kindle has all the same specs as the basic black Kindle that Amazon released in the fall of 2014.

It features an 800 x 600 resolution E-ink screen with touchscreen but no frontlight. Under the hood you’ll find a 1GHz Freescale CPU with 4GB internal storage, Wifi, and about four weeks of battery life (according to Amazon).

It’s selling in India for 5,999 rupees, or about $91 USD.

There’s no word on a US launch.

I’d like a white one, but not the unlighted version.

Note this Kindle was released in Fall 2014 and is called Kindle 7 by Amazon, even though there never was a Kindle 6.

Technically the paperwhite is the Kindle 6 (even though it’s running basically the same software as the basic Kindle and the Kindle Touch).

Still no Voyage II.

I’m increasingly worried that Amazon have stopped designing for quality, and instead aim for quantity and lower prices.

I like the grey one better. And I want TTS back in basic Kindles, otherwise I am not buying them.

BTW, Nate, take a look at an Indian audio books site called reado.com which is gaining a good foothold, in the (delayed) absence of audible, here.
