Kindle Unlimited Funding Rises in December 2015 as the Royalty Dips Yet Again

5857728038_c50cb07c85_oAmazon has announced the funding and royalty payments for Kindle Unlimited for December 2015.

Following a brief hiccup on Friday caused by a date miscalculation, Amazon revealed that the arbitrary funding pool for December was $13.5 million. The KENP per-page royalties were (by region):

  • US: 0.461 cents per page (USD), a drop of 6.3% from November’s payment of 0.492 cents
  • UK: 0.306 pence per page (GBP), a drop of 6.4% from November’s 0.327 pence.
  • Germany: 0.389 cents per page (EUR), a drop of 8.5% from November’s 0.425 cents.
  • France: €0.00429 cents per page (EUR), a drop of 6.3% from November’s 0.458 cents.
  • India: ?0.1008 per page (INR), a drop of 6.2% from October’s ?0.1075.

This is the second month that Amazon has varied the royalty to fit local markets, and as Chris Mcmullen points out the royalty has consistently dropped about 6.3% across the board.

Amazon has in fact been letting the payment drop almost every month since switching over to the new per-page royalty in July 2015:

For those who are interested, Amazon originally published the monthly Kindle Unlimited reports on 15 January before retracting them and republishing them. According to one author I know, there was a date emasculation:

The numbers make it pretty obvious that somebody ran a report that omitted a few days at the end of the year. I can tell this because my most popular Select book was a new release on Christmas Eve, and the number of pages read jumped from 12,000 in the first report to 26,000 in the second report. The other books all went up by much smaller, non-proportional amounts.

Thanks, Morris!

Here’s a list of the monthly funding pools.

[…] In fact, since July 2015 with the page reads, the monthly page reads readers are making has increased by a higher percentage than the pool of money, resulting in a lower per page payout. This means, more readers are using the program, a boon for Amazon because it keeps people coming to their site. For some authors they’ve seen their overall pays increase because the volume increased, but more see lower earnings because Amazon’s system is geared towards more heavily promoting the books that are already a success and keeping them there (the very nature of there’s over 1 million KU books, Amazon can’t promote all of them equally). https://the-digital-reader.com/2016/01/16/kindle-unlimited-funding-rises-in-december-2015-as-the-roya… […]
