Oynx Boox Unveils 9.7″ N96 and N96ML eReaders, No Ship Date Set

onyx boox n96Chinese ereader maker Onyx has quietly updated its website this week with a new product page for a couple new ereaders, and they’re also sending samples out to their retail partners.

A member of MobileRead noticed this week that Onyx is now listing the N96 and N96ML ereaders on its site. First teased in June 2015, these ereaders are upgraded versions of the existing Onyx Boox M96 ereader.

I recommended against buying that ereader when it shipped in 2013, but I have a much more positive opinion of the new N96.

These ereaders run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on a 1GHz CPU with either 512MB or 1GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. They’re also listed as having Wifi, Bluetooth, a microSD card slot, and a headphone jack and microphone.

Weighing in at around 450 grams, the ereaders measure 9.5mm thin and pack in a 3Ah battery which reportedly offers a battery life of around 4 weeks.

Both the N96 and N96ML have a screen resolution of 1200 x 825, but they don’t have the same touchscreen tech. The N96ML has a stylus-based digitizer touchscreen (and 1GB RAM), while the N96 has both capacitive and digitizer touchscreens (and 512MB RAM).

There’s no word yet on the ship date, but I can report that at least one of Onyx’s retail partners has a sample. You can see it below, to the left of the ginormous Onyx Boox Max:

Hi Nate,
Considering the nearly identical specs and appearance, why would you recommend the N96 over the M96?

The N96 has a capacitive touchscreen, so yes.

Although I do pine after a higher res screen.
