Deutsche Bahn Debuts Free Streaming Audiobook Library on ICE Trains

22977261135_7d8ec03caf_hIf you’re traveling through Germany this summer (and also know German) then you might want to check out Deutsche Bahn’s newest bonus for its passengers.

Earlier this month the railway added newspapers, mobile games, radio plays and audiobooks to ICE Portal, its in-train entertainment system.

Passengers can access German newspapers like Bild am Sonntag, Welt am Sonntag, Handelsblatt, and Süddeutsche Zeitungm as well as the Financial Times.

A total of nine audiobooks and radio plays will be available at any one time, including titles by  Simon Beckett, Andreas Eschbach, and David Baldacci as well as radio dramas featuring Sherlock Holmes and Jules Verne. The selection will rotate.

The content can be accessed from a mobile device’s web browser over the train’s Wifi network. The audiobooks and radio plays are free, but the newspapers must be paid for.

This is kind of nice, I suppose. I believe Deutsche Bahn is still trying to pretend they are like an airline in the entertainment field, forgetting that people carry their luggage (and ereaders, tablets and phones) with them on the train, and can actally access the internet now.

Free WLAN on the train is big, however, and probably will be much apprecited.
