Kindle Unlimited Funding Pool, Royalty, Increased in September 2016

6988272680_97102f42c6_bAmazon announced on Friday that the funding pool for Kindle Unlimited and KDP Select increased in September 2016, to $15.9 million. That is $100k more than in August, and represents a new peak for the funding pool.

The per-page royalty rose about 10% in the US and the EU markets (with the exception of Germany). The rate increase was smaller in Brazil.

  • US: $0.0050 (USD)
  • Germany: €0.0034 (EUR)
  • France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands: €0.0050 (EUR)
  • Brazil: R$ 0.012 (BRL)
  • UK, Mexico, Australia, India, Japan, Canada: no data

I don’t have info on other markets at this time.

The increase in royalty would appear to confirm my concern that the recent glitch which was affecting the pages-read count has indeed hit authors in the pocketbook. The funding pool stayed the same while the royalty rose, and that tells us that either fewer people used KU last month or that a larger than usual number of page views went uncounted.

That change in the number of pages read was first called a glitch, but there are now reports on KBoards that Amazon has mentioned having initiated a new anti-fraud algorithm in Kindle Unlimited. That algorithm might be eliminating real page views, but it might also have identified and filtered out fraudulent page views just like it is supposed to.

It is impossible to say which is happening here without more information from Amazon.

P.S. Here’s a list of the monthly funding pools. It does not include the bonuses paid out each month.
