Amazon Adds eBooks in 5 Indian Languages to the Kindle Store

kindle-india-amazonAmazon launched a local Kindle Store in India in 2012 – but only supported English. Yesterday they started to fix that oversight.

The retailer announced on Thursday that it was now carrying Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Gujarati, and Malayalam language eboks in the Kindle Store. Readers can access these books on their Kindles, Fire tablets, or Kindle apps for Windows, iOS, Android.

“We are excited to offer readers the largest digital selection of best sellers in five Indian languages. All you need is an Android or iOS device, or a Kindle eReader to get started. This is another step in our ongoing work to provide more choice and selection to Indian readers,” said Rajiv Mehta, Kindle India Country Manager.

Some of the book titles that have been added to the Kindle Book Store include Ishq Mein Shahar Hona by Ravish Kumar and Theek Tumhare Peechhe by Manav Kaul (Hindi), Rajaraja Chozhan by Sa. Na. Kannan, and Vantharkal Ventrarkal by Madhan (Tamil), Mrutyunjay by Shivaji Sawant andYayat i by Vishnu Sakharam Khandekar (Marathi), Ek Bija Ne Gamta Rahiye by Kaajal Oza Vaidya and Bhagvan Ni Tapal by Gunvant Shah (Gujarati), and Aarachar by K R Meera.

    Looks like these are all in the US Kindle Store as well. I have noticed that the current Kindles have keyboard layouts for each of these languages. They still lack localized UI and dictionaries, however.
