Arta Tech Updates Two eReaders w\Sony DRM

I never expected to see Sony’s two-year-old ebook DRM used by more than a few niche ebook apps, but now it has shown up on a couple ereaders.

Polish ereader maker ArtaTech announced on Wednesday that it had updated a couple of its existing ereaders with support for Sony’s ebook DRM. (Despite what that one person is saying, no, these are not new models).

And yes, both models still support Adobe’s ebook DRM.

Originally launched in November 2016, the InkBook Classic 2 is a budget ereader priced to compete with the basic Kindle. The InkBook Prime is a Kindle Paperwhite competitor that launched in November 2016.

The InkBook Classic 2 is an upgrade and replacement for the model which launched in Europe in 2015. The Classic 2 runs Android 4.2 on a dual-core CPU with 512MB RAM. In terms of storage, it has 4GB internal, and a microSD card slot. It has Wifi but no Bluetooth or audio.

The screen is nothing to write home about: 6″ Carta E-ink screen (800 x 600 resolution) and touchscreen but no frontlight.

The Inkbook Prime, on the other hand, has a slightly higher resolution 6″ Carta E-ink screen (1024 x 768) with frontlight and capacitive touchscreen. It runs Android 4.2 on a quad-core 1.6GHz CPU with 512MB RAM. It has 8GB of storage, and a microSD card slot. When it comes to connectivity it has both Wifi and Bluetooth.

According to the product listings, neither has Google Play. But you can install apps.

The InkBook Prime is currently available from ArtaTech for 113 euros (plus VAT) and from Amazon for $119. The InkBook Classic 2 can be had on Amazon for $79 and from ArtaTech for 63 euros (plus VAT).

And once you buy them you will be able to read ebook encumbered by Sony’s URMS DRM – if you can find them. I am not aware of any store which sells ebooks with that DRM, so this point is currently moot.
