Amazon to Open Bookstore in Old B&N Location in Washington DC

Amazon' first bookstore in the DC metro area has been announced, and it as not, as I was expecting, going to be located in northern Virginia.

Instead, Amazon is moving into a building vacated by B&N in 2011.

The Washington Post says Amazon’s first DC bookstore will be located in Georgetown:

Steven Roth, the chief executive of Vornado Realty Trust, told investors this week that Amazon has leased 10,000 square feet at 3040 M St. NW in Georgetown, a storefront previously occupied by Barneys New York. He did not specify when the store is set to open.

Amazon did not immediately return a request for comment. Jeffrey P. Bezos, the chief executive of Amazon, owns The Washington Post.

Here’s the relevant Google Maps search for that address.

As you can see in the street view, it’s not exactly the high-end retail district Amazon selected for its first bookstore. On the other hand it' still a step up from the location Amazon chose for its store in Portland or one of the stores in Manhattan.

The Amazon Books store in Georgetown will be located about three blocks down the street from Bridge Street Books, an indie bookstore.

It is moving into a space that was once home to a multi-story Barnes & Noble bookstore. The B&N store shuttered in 2011, after which Nike opened a store in part of the three-storey building.

Counting the pair of stores in or near Manhattan, Seattle, San Francisco and Boston, plus the stores planned or operating in Portland, Chicago, San Diego, and New Jersey, this is Amazon’s thirteenth bookstore.
