Amazon’s 14th Bookstore to Open in Los Angeles

Those rumors from March were true.

News broke on Thursday thatAmazon’s fourteenth bookstore will be coming to Los Angeles.

Amazon Books, part of Amazon.com Inc., applied for building permits last week for a 5,227-square-foot suite at the Westfield Century City mall, according to a record on the L.A. Department of Building and Safety website.

The main project application was submitted May 9 and received initial plan check approval the same day, but a building permit had not yet been issued as of Thursday afternoon, the website says. The application describes Amazon Books as a “first time tenant in Westfield Century City” in suite No. 1970.

Amazon already has space in other high-end Westfield properties – UTC mall in San Diego and Garden State Plaza in Paramus, N.J. The company didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday about the space in Century City.

Other planned and operating Amazon Books locations include pairs of stores in or near Seattle, San Francisco, Manhattan, and Boston, as well as stores in Portland, Chicago, San Diego, and New Jersey, making this Amazon’s 14th bookstore.

There’s no bookstore in the Westfield Century City mall right now. Borders had a store in there but then the chain closed in 2011.

Other Amazon Books locations under development include a building in DC that B&N moved out of in 2011 and a mall in Manhattan where Borders had a store right up until its bankruptcy.

And of course Amazon’s first bookstore is located in an upscale mall that B&N left in 2011.

Do you think there’s a pattern here?
