Sony DPT-RP1 Now Shipping From B&H Photo – $699 (video)

Mike Cane tipped me to the news that Sony’s second epaper writing slate is now available online at B&HPhoto.

The  DPT-RP1 features a 13.3″ Carta E-ink screen, Wifi and BT, and retails for $699.

Sony’s DPT-RP1 is the king of all epaper writing slates. It’s built around a flexible 13.3″ Carta E-ink screen, and packs in not one but two touchscreens (capacitive and electromagnetic stylus).

Its screen resolution is 1650 x 2200, a nice upgrade from the last model. It runs a closed version of Android on a quad-core 1.2GHz Marvell IAP140 chip with 16GB storage and a microSD card slot.

Other improvements on the last model include an integrated NFC chip which enables users to unlock their device simply by tapping their smartphone on a certain spot on the DPT-RP1.

The DPT-RP1 also has Bluetooth, although it’s not clear whether you will be able to pair it with BT accessories, and Wifi, which you can use to access the internet.

The new device also gains several useful software features missing in the old model, including a split-screen mode where you can have two documents open at once.

Does this mean, there’s already an English-language user interface? Too bad, it doesn’t appear to support EPUB documents.

That’s a good question.

I had assumed that it would have an English interface, but that may not be true.

$699 is way too much for people to pay to write / sketch in e-ink; it may be what it takes to make a profit on the device, but with 10.1″ tablets at $99 – $149 people are going to decide 10.1″ is big enough

You are right, but not in terms of the price. Many would gladly pay that much if it would give them paperish feeling and the simplicity of writing and editing in a practically text-based environment free of all the software rubbish you will have to work through on any commercial tablet, let it be Android, iOs or Windows.

Where this might fail is – again, not the price – the software side though. If it is laggy, un-intuitive and menu-loaden, if it does not support ePub and other common file formats (docx, anybody???) then it might just miss, even with all its potential, the target group, imho.

BTW, on Amazon it says Release Date will be June 20th. I might give it a try.
