AUOptronics Shows Off Foldable AMOLED Screen at SID Display Week (video)

Rollable/foldable/flexible screens are still for the most part science fiction these days with the latest work still in the prototype stage, but screen tech companies are working to make them a reality.

Charbax met with AUOptronics  (AUO) at SID Display Week, and they showed him their latest lab projects, including a  bendable AMOLED screen:

At  5″ and  1280 x 720, that’s a pretty sharp screen. It’s not as sharp the latest and best smartphone screens, but it’s better than the resolution on my smartphone and it is significantly sharper than the screen on the long-forgotten Readius from Polymer Vision.

Way back in 2007, a startup called Polymer Vision launched a phone/ereader with a foldable 5″ E-ink screen. The Readius had a screen resolution of 320 by 240 pixels (QVGA) in 16 shades of gray.

Yes, that is as low as it sounds, but ten years go that was still amazing.

And it just goes to show how much screen resolution has increased in the past decade – and yet foldable screens are still a lab project rather than a consumer product.
