Readmoo MooInk Goes Up for Pre-Order in Taiwan – 6″, 300 PPI E-ink Screen, $141 USD

E-ink’s long time partner in Taiwan is out to take the prize for both the most ridiculously named ereader and the most over-priced.

The MooInk (pauses to check the calendar) is a new 6″ ereader from Readmoo, an established ebook retailer in Taiwan. Announced in May, this ereader looks like it came from the same designer responsible for the Tolino ereaders, or the Crema Shine.

Alas, while it has a similar style, it doesn’t have a similar price – or software. The hardware is impressive, however.

The MooInk is built around a 6″ Carta E-ink display, and runs Android 4.4 on a 1GHz Freescale CPU with 512MB RAM. It has an IR touchscreen and Wifi, but there’s no mention in the product listing of a frontlight or audio. (Early press coverage indicated there was a frontlight, however.)

In terms of storage, the MooInk has 8GB internal storage and a microSD card slot. It supports Epub and PDF in English, Japanese, and Korean, and since it runs Android you may be able to install apps.

I would hope that you will have this option, because otherwise the high price tag( 4290 yuan, or about $646 USD) would be impossible to justify.

Edit: Google translate is having fun at my expense today, and i should have known better. It said the price was in yuan, but a reader pointed out that was incorrect. The price is $4290 NTD, or about $141 USD,

Compared to the Kindle Paperwhite, which sells for 958 yuan, that is  pretty decent price.

Thanks!

Google translate said the price was in yuans. I thought that was strange but I wasn’t going to argue.

How is the hardware impressive? It sounds part for the course when it comes to e-readers…
