It’s Official: Createspace to Stop Providing Publishing Services This Spring

Createspace is now telling authors the same thing I was the first to report you last week: The company will no longer provide editorial, formatting, design, and other services.

They sent an email yesterday to current clients, informing them of the upcoming change:

You recently completed a design service with our CreateSpace Services team. We’re emailing to inform you that we’ll no longer offer or fulfill any paid professional services, including text or design changes to your cover or interior files. If you want to make changes to your design files, those changes must be purchased and submitted no later than March 15, 2018, and completed by April 20, 2018. No changes can be made to these files after April 20, 2018.

This change does not impact the availability of published titles. Amazon remains committed to helping authors realize their goals through self-publishing high quality books. Visit CreateSpace or Kindle Direct Publishing to learn more about the tools and resources available to authors.

These services were not widely used, but Createspace  did maintain a high standard. Several authors chimed in on last week’s story, describing Createspace’s service as expensive but prompt, thorough, and high quality.

Thanks, Joe!

CS’s "publishing services" were widely used earlier. They were also widely described as mediocre among self-publishing authors with serious chops, too.

I can’t say that I’m disappointed to find that they’re shutting down.

Prediction: Amazon will sell or close Createspace within one year. It bought Createspace in 2005 to have a foot in the POD space. With the explosion in POD, it doesn’t need it anymore. Despite the email, printing books is not part of Amazon’s long-term plan.

PS: I, for one, am saddened by CS' changes. I used it for several POD books, and I was always happy with its results and customer service.

Amazon would never create a competitor by selling Createspace.

Like Mobipocket, Amazon will close Createspace once they have fully built its replacement.

As a dedicated Create Space newbie indie author I can say that many of us were in process and had paid our money and signed their contract in good faith. We were given notice that we had just a few short weeks before they closed their design doors. Some, who they determined were close to the start, were offered their money back. Many, like myself, were told that we had gone too far in the process so we best finish quickly or have to go somewhere else and pay whatever new costs were required to complete. The fair way would have been for them to allow those deemed ‘too far along’ to complete their work they had paid for. I rushed to complete and just found out that my book should/could have been much less expensive to purchase with reducing some pages, and would have happily done this if given more time. Now I have to find another designer and pay more. I am very disappoined with Create Space. They had great people working there and were very hepful until this occurred suddenly and unfairly. Any suggestions as to a good next step?

I recently had my title "suppressed" on CreateSpace/Amazon for "misleading keywords." The title is no longer up on Amazon.com and the customer service has not helped me. It is the second book in a series.

Out of frustration, I republished the first book in the series on KDP and it took all of five minutes. I am not able to do this with the second title, because it is not live on Amazon until CreateSpace resolves the keyword issue.

I also called the customer service number (206) 922-0860 (which was a pain to find) and spoke with a rep. They are getting an onslaught of calls for assistance, so my book won’t be up and available for at least a week. Frustrating, to say the least. I’d like to be done with CS, but am stuck until my book is live again. Ugh.

I told my husband (a lawyer) about this and he said it may be CS’s strategy to retain books when they are sold. I hope that’s not true, but I wonder if any other authors – especially with series books – have received the validation email and had their books suppressed recently?
