BookFusion’s New Calibre Plugin Lets You Sync Your eBook Library With the Cloud

If you keep your ebook library in calibre, and you want an easy way to sync it online with your mobile devices, may I recommend that you look at BookFusion’s new calibre plugin.

BookFusion is an ebook startup with a cloud storage service that launched in March of this year. The service lets you upload up to 150 ebook files for free, and then download them to matching BookFusion apps for iOS and Android.

Now it has launched a plugin for the ebook library app Calibre that will save you from having to upload the ebook files. Simply install the plugin and set it up, and it will automatically sync your Calibre ebook library on your PC with your BookFusion account.

More specifically, the BookFusion Calibre plugin allows the users of Calibre to to do the following:

  • Sync and manage their entire eBook collection from Calibre to the cloud. They no longer need to pay a monthly VPS fee, continuously patch servers or keep additional ports open on their desktops at home.
  • Sync metadata across devices
  • Reading progress for eBooks in their Calibre library is now synced across all devices
  • Coming Soon (Share eBooks Easily with Friends & Family) –  Allow users that use Calibre to easily share their eBooks with friends and family that are not technically inclined.

You can find out more about the plugin  at MobileRead.

I have not had a chance to try it; things have been rather busy here, so I’d love to hear what you think.

It’s great.
Works fast.

Handles all file types (it appears to have priority list – so epub is here, it will be used, if it’s not here – fb2 or pdf will be used, etc)

If you arleady have library in Bookfusion and it’s books are without ISBN and you don’t want dublicates…well, it’s better just delete unread books from it and re-sync (and manually add bookfusion: identifier for read books).

Book dublicates are matched by Bookfusion’s internal id (assigned by plugin) or ISBN (if you uploaded book via web). (no support for ASINs/ goodreads:/uri: ids).

It has current issues like inability (yet?) to sync updated tags from Calibre or sync highlights/reading progress from bookfusion to calibre fields (like old Marvin plugin did).

'All their devices' in announcement should be read as 'all devices where either bookfusion app exists or web version can be used'. This mean iOS and Android devices and computers with decent web browser. Bookfusion for Android doesn’t have eInk mode (yet?) so it looks terrible on Android eInk devices like Bouye Likebook (too much animation, too little contrast, too much scrolling).

No, I just like the idea of the plugin.

Think I came across these guys before. The app has support for the few interactive ebooks I have. The plug-in seems to work well and is pretty fast.

Pleasantly surprised.

Looking forward to that sharing feature.
