Reports of the Kindle Voyage’s death have been greatly exaggerated.
This four-year-old ereader had been removed from the menus on Amazon’s site a few weeks ago after it went out of stock, but it is now back in stock on Amazon’s website, and is once again shipping. You can get a 3G model shipped today, but you will need to wait a few weeks if you want the cheapest option (Wifi plus special offers).
There had been speculation that the Voyage had been discontinued, but apparently that did not happen. The model currently being offered has the same specs as before (even the model number is the same), leaving us with a frenzy of speculation over what was just a simple supply issue.
When Amazon removed the Kindle Voyage from its website early last month, I was careful to avoid saying it was discontinued. I felt that without official word from Amazon it was too early too say what had happened, and now it looks like my caution has been rewarded.
TBH I really thought it had been discontinued; that made the most sense to me. But I chose to be cautious because we had gone through a similar situation with the basic Kindle earlier this year. That device had been removed from Amazon’s menus, only to be restore a few days later.
Let’s not all jump the gun next time, okay?
I’m glad to see it’s back in stock, because I love mine. As I said before, it is very light and thin, and over time that makes a difference.
So I followed the link and looked at the product. One odd thing I see is that the initially displaed “most helpful” reviews, a few pages of them, are one-star, even though most people seem to like theirs just fine. I find that an interesting phenomena.
The link eventually leads to Amazon Warhouse. I’m afraid the Voyage is gone for good.
Play around with the options, and you’ll see Amazon has a number of models in stock as new units, not used units from Amazon Warehouse.
When I did a search this morning for the Voyage – it only shows refurbished devices for sale. There is nothing showing up that can be preordered or any mention of a future in stock date. I would say the Voyage is dead.
It still looks discontinued…going down the rabbit hole to find one sounds like a final stock roundup to liquidate to me.
That’s what makes this so weird – it didn’t look that way last night.
What a typo – I meant Warehouse, not Warhouse. 😉 I played with all the options, Nate, but I don’t see new units, only the refurbished ones.
Select “Wifi” and “no special offers”, and look at the bottom offer. I am shown an offer to buy a new one for $219.
And that’s just one of the offers for a new Kindle Voyage.
What they’ve done is added a listing for used items. There is a “new” tab that says “sorry”.
I also see a new 3g Voyage available with prime shipping. There is also a refurbished wifi model and a listing for used wifi models. But as Nate said the 3g model is availabe as new for $219.
