Kindle Firmware Update 5.12.1 Released

Amazon rolled out another firmware update for its Kindle ereaders yesterday.

The affected models include all new Kindles as well as older units as far back as the second Kindle Paperwhite, and according to the changelog this is a relatively minor update, with only one new feature (that we know of).

Amazon has made a minor change to the "Before You Go" box that you find at the end of an ebook when you finish it. Now that box will suggest ebooks to read next, and give you the option of opening that ebook with a single click.

Amazon will be automatically installing the update over the next few weeks, but if you don’t want to wait you can download it from Amazon’s help pages.

5.12.1 changelog:

• Read Now: In the coming weeks, you will be able to read items that you own with a single click from the ‘Before You Go’ dialog.
• Performance improvements, bug fixes, and other general enhancements.

P.S. While this firmware update is relatively minor, it did reveal a couple interesting details about the new Kindle Oasis. According to a hacker over at Mobileread, that device has the codename "Stinger", and (aside from the LEDs in the color-changing frontlight) uses the same hardware as the previous Oasis model.
