The Chinese gadget maker Xiaomi has just announced a new ereader.
The Xiaomi Mi Reader is a budget-priced 6″ ereader that supports a wide variety of ebook formats. It runs a custom version of Android 8.1 Oreo on a quad-core 1.8GHz Allwinner B300 CPU with 1GB RAM and 16GB internal storage.
Screen resolution is 212 PPI, and the Mi Reader has both a touchscreen and frontlight. Supported formats include Epub and PDF, and office formats including PPT, XLS, and DOC. Weighing in at 178 grams, the Mi Reader has a 1.8Ah battery and measures 8.3mm thin.
It’s going up for pre-order slash crowdfunding in China tomorrow at the price of CNY 579 (~$ 8240), and is scheduled to ship in China on 18 December. It’s reportedly only going to be shipped to backers, andt there’s no word if it will be sold at retail or make it to international markets.

Does it handle audiobooks?
No micro Sd slot? For me that’s a deal breaker

I don’t think it supports audiobooks, no.
Nate,
Thanks. That’s too bad.
Is it expensive to add the necessary hardware/software to support audiobooks?
Xavier
Sd card support or not
Can we install android application on Mi Reader? for example whatsApp or other online library app?
If it runs Android than can’t an audio book app just be installed, or is there just no speakers? I wonder how well this will do as a tablet? Do you know if it will be available in the US? Thanks!
