3M eReader caught on Film
A new video showed up on Youtube a few days back and it gives us our first look at what might be the new 3M eReader.
As you might know, 3M are working on their own digital library. It’s called the Cloud Library, and it’s intended to be a direct competitor to OverDrive, one of the dominant companies in the niche. The neat part about the 3M Cloud Library is that it is designed to easily lend ebook readers as well as ebooks. That’s not something that can be done with OverDrive, and many librarians see it as a selling point.
The following video shows a walk-through of the new system, which is in beta right now. It also shows an ereader which is described as the one that 3M are providing to libraries so it can be checked out to patrons.
I already knew about this ebook reader and where it came from; it’s the G6 and it was developed by a Chinese company called Boeye. But, and this is important, I also know that this is just the unit they are using to beta test the system. It might not be the one that they ship when the Cloud Library finally ships.
I carefully double checked that point with 3M before posting because I didn’t want to repeat the mistake I made last time (mistake, correction). The device at right is not yet the final 3M eReader.
But the operative word in that sentence is yet. This might end up being the model that ships, but we won’t know that until it happens. (I think it will be the 3M eReader, but that’s just me.)
