AOL to buy Huffington Post
The hot story this morning is that AOL have agreed to buy Huffington Post for $315 million USD. Founder and head of HuffPo Arianna Huffington will stay with AOL and take on the role of president and editor in chief of the Huffington Post Media Group. This is the second major acquisition in the last 6 months; the other was TechCrunch, which changed hands back in September for $25m USD.
I’m about 3 hours behind everyone else, which means I get to read what the early birds say about the deal. The most common refrain is people wondering if AOL really have a plan beyond simply buying successful blogs. TBH, I don’t think they do. On the other hand, I do think that Ms. Huffington in her new role could fill that need. But it’s really too early to say.
