Argos to Launch £99 Tablet Later This Week
The UK Argos is going to be shipping their very own tablet later this week.
The MyTablet is going to join the crowded budget tablet market in the UK with an average screen, average CPU, run of the mill price, and and on the face of it fairly ordinary specs, all for £99.
But at least you can get it in pink.
This tablet will ship with a 7″ 1024 x 600 screen. It’s running Android 4.2 on a 1.6GHz dual-core CPU with 1GB RAM, 8GB of storage, Wifi, Bluetooth, and a pair of cameras (2MP and VGA). The device will come with either a pink or silver metal case, and it will also have an HDMI port.
In terms of apps, the MyTablet will come pre-loaded with 19apps like BBC iPlayer, Angry Birds, Facebook, Twitter, Google Play, an Argos retail app, a reading app, and more.
Argos is one of the UK’s larger retailers , and you’ll be able to find this tablet in their over 700 stores and on their website. Their market is similar to that of Walmart or Target here in the US.
With that in mind, I’m not exactly sure why Argos is launching this tablet. So far as I know Argos doesn’t sell digital content, so I’m not sure why they would want a tablet. Perhaps they see it as a sales venue for their website?
Here’s Argos' explanation: “Customers have never had such a good quality tablet at such an affordable price. At just £99.99 the Argos MyTablet is highly competitive with a great specification, and fits neatly in the range of tablets we have on offer,” said John Walden, Managing Director of Argos.
What I do know is that if this £99 sold in the US for $99, it would have about the same specs and price as the Hisense Sero 7. This suggests that the MyTablet is not selling at a subsidized price, and that means we probably won’t be surprised later with a new digital content store.
