Audible for Android Updated

audibleHave you noticed how the audible app seems to be getting a little long in the tooth? It looks like that may have come to Amazon’s attention lately, because yesterday Amazon rolled out a major update for the Audible for Android app.

The update didn’t add any major new features (like the Whipsersync for Voice which was added in September) but it did improve the looks and general design of the menu and interface.

Amazon is touting this as a "beautiful new design", but so far as I can tell this isn’t new so much as a refresh. The interface now incorporates design elements found in the current versions of Android, including the slider bar, tabs, buttons, and the like.

The app also reportedly has a simplified library management and has been reorganized to improve navigation.

I have also noticed that Amazon has made a subtle change to their badge icons. The badges, which can be earned for various activities inside the app, are now flat icons and not faux 3d icons.

Changelog:

What’s new in version 1.5
• Beautiful new design
• Improved navigation
• Simplified library management
• Chapter-level progress bar in the player
• Improved stability and performance

Audible has dominated the downloadable audiobook market since before Amazon bought it, and that doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon. What with Amazon’s efforts to integrate Audible more closely into the Kindle platform (Whispersync for voice), Audible Creation Exchange and that marketplace’s domination of the self-pub market, and Amazon’s ongoing efforts to find a new price point for audiobooks, Amazon is set to dominate this market indefinitely.

I wish that they would work on their WP 8 app, it’s buggy, not very stable and rather unreliable. I listen to a lot of Audible books when riding my bike, but have yet to have a single ride without the app quitting on me without any reason.
I used to have an Android phone, but had to move to a WP solution due to professional reasons, and this is starting to get to me.

The iPhone/iPod app got the new "flat" style badges (& a general rework) back in February when the new iPad version launched so I don’t know how much it has to do with the iOS7 unveiling in June.
