B&N launched new e-reader upgrade program (it’s better than you think)

Today Barnes & Noble announced a new trade-in program that’s good for new Nook owners. If you bring in your old ebook reader  when you go to buy a Nook,  you can get 30 free ebooks in exchange.

The offer is available starting tomorrow, and it covers both the Nook Touch and the Nook Color. Along with the $315 in ebooks, B&N will give you a 2GB microSD card. Now that’s a nice deal.

They’v released the complete list of titles ( here), and it looks like at least some are current in-print books. They’re spread across several genres, including Cooking, Kids, Classics, Humor, Lifestyle, Fiction, Sports, History, True Crime and Reference. Some of the free titles include: The Good Housekeeping Cookbook, Cristina Ferrare’s Big Bowl of Love, Creating Your Best Life, Glory in the Fall: The Greatest Moments in World Series History, 21st Century Crossword Puzzle Dictionary, My Boyfriend Wrote a Book About Me and timeless favorites including Secret Garden and Robinson Crusoe.

Update: Mike Cane pointed out that I missed an important detail. This isn’t a trade in program. You just have to show the old ebook reader when you buy the new one. That just made the deal a lot better. Now you can get the free ebooks with a new Nook without giving up your still working older ebook reader.

B&N could really sell a lot of Nooks with this.

I don’t see anything that says "Give us your old device." Everything says "Show us." Which makes me wonder about gaming that system. Will they at least note serial numbers?

You’re right. It didn’t even occur to me that this wasn’t a trade-in program.

I’ve never heard of a show but not give program. How weird.

Sony had a trade-in once. B&N probably didn’t want to deal with the Recycling Hell it would bring down on them.

The list is there, btw. It’s a small link right above the "See Why Nook is Best" button. A popup window appears with the 30 free book titles.

It didn’t work for me, but thanks.

You have to look at the fine print, but this promotion is not open to current NOOK owners. You have to show an e-reader "of any other eReader brand."
