Bowker Finally Notifies Users of Hacked Website and Stolen Credit Cards
It’s been over 3 weeks since I informed you that one of Bowker’s websites had been hacked and that credit card numbers had been stolen, and Bowker is just now beginning to inform the affected parties.
I heard of the news on Twitter from Angela Highland:
I say FINALLY because I received notification from the credit union through which @solarbirdy and I have that card back on September 22nd that the card had been compromised and they had to shut it down. /2

Now, as of mail that arrived as of 11/24, I have FINALLY received word from Bowker about the hack to their site. Long after my credit card was replaced. NOT impressed by the lag time here. 4/

And if for whatever reason my transaction is proven to NOT be secure, I'd like more than two months' lag time until the site finally admits to me that "well GOSH that last purchase you did from us? It may have compromised your card. SRY OUR BAD". 6/

It could be worse; I’ve been reporting about Createspace account getting hacked for seven months now, and yet Amazon has said nothing – not to those impacted, nor even to me.
Bowker’s 3 weeks may be frustrating, but it’s nothing compared to Amazon’s Seven Months.

Any info on when their site might be fixed / up and running to take new orders for block isbns? I’ve been waiting nearly 3 weeks to get a response to my faxed request.

Are you publishing print? If not, don’t worry about it and just publish without them.

yes, ebooks don’t really need ISBNs – you can always add them later
