Changes coming for Sony’s Digital Comics Service?
Each Wednesday for the past year and a half the PSP Digital Comics Store have posted a list of the latest titles added to the store. I’ve been watching that update since February 2010, and yesterday’s post contained a surprising bit of news.
Here are the the latest new comics for the PSP. This week will be the final update for digital comics on the PSP. The Digital Comics Team will continue to work on bringing the comic service to other Sony devices. We’ll make sure to keep you updated with any future developments right here on the PlayStation.Blog. In the meantime, you can continue to download any of the over 4,000 existing comics from the comic store as usual. Thanks for your support and we hope you continue to enjoy comics on PSP!
Note that the store isn’t closing, but it has stopped growing. It’s not clear what Sony plans to do with digital comics, but something is going to happen. I don’t think they’re giving up on digital comics. If they were then they would announce that the service will end. That would be the cheaper option that continuing to support a marginal operation.
But I did notice that the weekly updates have been thin the past couple months, and there weren’t any posts during May. That might be a sign that publishers aren’t submitting content at the rate they used to.
Either way, something is happening.
