Hands On With the Onyx Boox Max 2 Pro and Boox Note – Coming Soon to Amazon! (video)

Yesterday I brought you the scoop that the Boox Note will ship early next month from Onyx’s , and now it seems we will soon be able to order it fromthe official Onyx stores on Amazon as well.

Liliputing and have posted hands on videos for the Onyx Boox Note and the Boox Max 2 Pro, and in both videos the Onyx reps promised that Onyx would sell the ereaders through Amazon.

It is unclear whether that is true, but one can hope.

The Onyx Boox Max 2 Pro and Boox Note are 13.3″ and 10.3″ versions of basically the same ereader. They both run Android 6.0 on a quad-core 1.6GHz CPU with 2GB RAM and they both have dual-touchscreen technologies. You can draw on their screen with a fingertip (capacitive) or use the pressure-sensitive Wacom stylus with its 2048 degrees of sensitivity.

Besides the screen size, the one key difference are the ports. The Note has a USB-C port (ugh) while the Max 2 Pro has a regular USB port. Both devices have Wifi, BT, speakers, and a mike.

Edit: And both the Max 2, as well as the Note "Pro", have HDMI ports. The Onyx Boox Note mentioned below does not.

The Note is up for pre-order now for 462 euros, and is scheduled to ship in early February. The Max 2 Pro is back-ordered, and should ship later this month.  It costs 671 euros.

We do not know when the Note Pro will be released.

There’s some deception going on here with this “review”. It’s really a product promotion to generate sales because there’s no distinction made between the Max2 and Max2 Pro, There’s a clear and obvious need for that comparison but it’s deliberately ignored so the Max2 could be mistaken for the top of the line $1000 Max2 Pro that at least has double the storage at 64gb and it was earlier reported to have the touch screen unlike the cheaper version but that may have been wrong. Anyhow the Max2 was selling on Amazon last night for $880 rather than the $800 price stated at Liliputing. They also deliberately avoid making any distinctions and conceal any posted questions regarding that so buyer beware!

I didn’t make it that far into either video, so thank you for pointing that out.

TBH I found the claims made in the first minute or so very annoying and stopped watching. Clearly the videos got more annoying as time went on.

Why do you dislike USB C? I’m a tad dubious. Does it have a micro SD slot that can max out to 1Tb (yeah they don’t exist yet but will some day)? If not why not?
Content is expensive storage is cheap and I dislike having stuff on the cloud. Not everywhere has reliable or secure wifi/cellular connections.
More importantly I don’t ever want tech companies to dictate how much storage is enough. That’s for me to decide not them. It’s one reason I loathe the Ipad (everything has to through Itunes and Icloud. Ummmm ….no) and refuse to buy any android tablet without a microsd slot either

because there was no need to adopt it on this device when it is really only going to be used for charging

because it means bothering with yet another cable

because USB-C is not really a standard – I am told it’s actually about a half-dozen standards that all use the same plug, making it a "pray that it works" standard (I dislike bad engineering)

Thanks. I was hoping that the one cable to charge them all would be great. Guess not 🙂
Does this machine have a micro sd expansion slot

between Apple and the three existing common USB plugs, that just isn’t going to happen. The best we can do is fight against adding yet another cable.

Why does a brand new e-reader use an over 2 year old version of android (Android 6.0 released October 5, 2015)?

Nate Hoffelder January 12, 2018 um 9:53 am

Because this is a custom use that requires a lot of tweaking, and no one else is working on it. And Onyx is a small company that can only devote so much in terms of man hours to the project.

Is there any word on when Amazon will begin selling these two devices? They don’t appear to have product pages for them quite yet.

Nate Hoffelder February 8, 2018 um 6:48 am

My take s that Onyx was speaking through their hat. These devices might one day be sold on Amazon, but soon? I doubt it.

Everything is going to USB-C now. I dismiss most products that don’t have USB-C. It’s THE one port that everything can have and it’s very capable: Plug my Onyx into my laptop to charge it and extend the display with one cable? Yes please.
