Kindle Oasis Gets Frontlight Color Warmth Controls in 5.12.1.1 Update

Amazon’s newest ereader is going to arrive tomorrow, and that leaves Amazon just enough time for one last firmware update.

On Tuesday Amazon released a firmware update for the Kindle Oasis (2019). According to the changelog, the new Oasis got the "Read Now" feature that was announced for the other Kindle models a few weeks ago, and it also got a new timing feature for its color-changing frontlight. You can now have the Oasis shift between between white and amber on a schedule.

It’s not clear whether the transition will be as gradual as on Kobo’s ereaders, which have had a color-shifting frontlight for several years now. We’ll have to wait for user reports before we know for sure, but in any case, it is good to see Amazon slowly catching up to the competition.

Amazon will be releasing the update over the air, or you can download it from Amazon’s website and install it yourself.

Here’s the changelog:

What’s new?

  • Warmth Schedule: Schedule the front light to automatically shift between cool white and warm amber.
  • Read Now: In the coming weeks, you will be able to read items that you own with a single click from the ‘Before You Go’ dialog.
  • Performance improvements, bug fixes, and other general enhancements
