Kobo Signs New Retail Partner in Ireland – Hughes & Hughes

Kobo might not be a leading ebookstore in any market other than Canada, but they are certainly pursuing markets in a way that no one else seems to be interested in attempting.

In addition to partners in New Zealand, Australia, Portugal, and South Africa, Kobo has scooped up a new retail partner in Ireland.

They’ve recently signed a new deal with Hughes & Hughes, one of Ireland’s booksellers. I cannot find an announcement from Kobo, but according to one source the ereaders are already in stores. H&H is selling the Kobo Mini for €89.95 and the Kobo Glo for €135.95.

According to their website, Hughes & Hughes has 5 stores across Ireland, a country with a population of around 4.5 million. That makes them a distinctly second place (or even third) bookseller, falling behind Eason, which has 60 stores in Ireland.

Eason would make a better partner, don’t you think? Yes, they would, but they are about to launch their own ereader, the Leaf, so it doesn’t seem likely that they would have been interested in signing with Kobo.

The H&H website has already been updated, and it looks like the bookseller is getting the same deal as Pick 'n Pay in South Africa, the ABA, the BA, and WHSmith received. Hughes & Hughes is getting a cut of ereader sales, and they are also getting an affiliate’s commission on ebooks sold in the Kobo ebookstore to H&H customers.
